Independent journalism for
the cities we share
Urban Voices is India's independent editorial platform dedicated to the people, places, and policies shaping our cities. We report on what works, question what doesn't, and amplify the voices that rarely make it into mainstream news.
Cities for People — not just infrastructure
Urban India is home to over 500 million people and growing. The decisions made today — about transport, housing, air, water, public spaces, and governance — will shape the lived experience of hundreds of millions for generations. Yet the people most affected by these decisions rarely have a platform.
Urban Voices was founded to change that. We believe that better cities come from better conversations — and that those conversations need to be accessible, evidence-based, and rooted in the lived experience of urban residents, not just policymakers and planners.
The Five Pillars of Urban Voices
Everything we publish is guided by these five commitments to our readers and to our cities.
We give platform to the issues that determine the health, happiness, and sustainability of cities and the people who live in them — especially the issues that don't make national headlines but matter deeply at the street level.
We don't just report problems. We actively seek out and document local and global solutions that are working — from cycling infrastructure in Pune to water governance in Singapore — so Indian cities can learn from each other and from the world.
Urban and environmental policy is complex. Our job is to make it comprehensible — not by dumbing it down, but by connecting data, policy, and lived experience in ways that are genuinely useful to a curious general reader.
We believe informed citizens make better voters, better neighbours, and better advocates. Our coverage gives readers the context they need to engage with urban issues on their own terms — not just as consumers of information, but as participants in their city's future.
The scale of the urban challenge is enormous, but it is not hopeless. Urban Voices exists to nurture a sense of agency — the belief that cities can and do get better, and that the people who live in them have a role to play in making that happen.
Building since 2016
Urban Voices launched as an independent platform for urban journalism. Received the Connect Karo Award from World Resources Institute, USA, in its founding year — recognising outstanding contribution to urban sustainability communication.
Coverage expanded from Gujarat to a national focus across 30+ Indian cities, with contributors joining from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and beyond.
Rebuilt the platform, grew the contributor network to 50+, and deepened coverage across transportation, environment, housing, and civic innovation.
Began aligning editorial standards with international urban journalism benchmarks — longer-form analysis, data storytelling, and a structured contributor programme.
Complete redesign launching with new editorial identity, contributor profiles, and deeper data-led coverage of India's urban transition.
We don't take advertising.
We don't have owners with agendas.
Urban Voices is funded entirely through reader support, grants, and partnerships with organisations whose values align with ours. Every editorial decision is made independently — no advertiser, funder, or partner has any influence over what we publish, how we cover it, or who we hold accountable.
When we make mistakes, we correct them publicly. When we have conflicts of interest, we declare them. We believe accountability journalism requires accountability from journalists too.
The people behind the stories
Urban Voices is a collective — not a masthead. Our contributors are journalists, researchers, planners, architects, activists, and engaged citizens who write from direct experience of the cities they cover.
